I think this is probably no secret, but for those unaware, I am a bit of a movie
snob fanatic. I
enjoy movies of all kinds, have very strong opinions about them, and even enjoy talking in movie quotes.
Saying that, it should then be obvious that this site was named after the movie
The Science of Sleep,
by visionary director Michael Gondry. While I do not cite it as a perfect movie - in fact, I have several qualms
with it, haha - I do recommend it for everyone, because you come away from it, engaged and thinking about
what you just saw; you have feelings about the movie - and whether they're satisfaction, frustration, or a
mixture of both, you are still
part of that experience and I think that's a success for any movie.
So what does that have to do with
Night? Several of the themes that run rampant throughout remind
me a great deal of our
Model 01 - the idea of restlessness and uncertainty with your relationships with
others, where you stand as an individual in both dreams and reality, and even if reality is all that great to begin
with. Night struggles with his identity and his purpose in life - chiefly, making Riiko happy, and it comes to
define him as a character. Just as Stephane, in the movie, has to choose between his subconscious desires
and his waking days, Night has to struggle with his own battle between doing what he can for Riiko and wishing
he could do even more - do something only a
human could. It's a serious issue that he grapples with
through most of the series and everytime I watch
The Science of Sleep, I am reminded of
Night's
development as a person.
That, and you know, he's a figure, so science. Believe me, this is the least craziest of my titles, lately
and
it actually makes sense.
