At the estimated age of six, Shinogu's parents died and he was left alone in the world, forced to shoulder their debt. When Narita Shihoko took him in, without her husband's consent, he was a withdrawn child, abused in an emotional and physical sense (Ref: Vol. 5, Ch. 22, Pg. 21), completely detached from everything and everyone around him.

One snowy day, Shinogu decided to run away. To his irritation, three year-old Hatsumi decided to follow him, calling out for her "brudder". He angrily tells her to stop following him because he's not her brother and when she begins crying - young Shinogu, frustrated by his entire situation finally breaks down, with the following:

Shinogu: I'm going home...even if I'm all alone there.
Shinogu: I hate everybody. Mommy...that man...everybody. Your mommy...your daddy...
Shinogu: I'm going...home by myself...so there.

In response to this, his sister innocently pats him on the head, trying to cure his 'owie' and tells him she loves him. This marks the moment Shinogu discovered what it was to feel warmth again and what it was to love. It is the origin of his feelings for Hatsumi and their development.

Not long after this incident, his family moved into the housing complex and his mother and father started arguing constantly about how they were going to pay off the debt attached to Shinogu (Ref: Vol. 11, Ch. 47, Pg. 34). This fighting resulted in Shinogu feeling deeply responsible for his new family's unhappiness and leads to his decision later in life to stop relying on them. It also leads to the Tachibana-Narita contract - in which Narita Toru agrees to act as the fall-guy for Tachibana Shuichiro, who is having an affair with Odagiri Miho; all in exchange for the money necessary to pay off Shinogu's debt. In a very tragic way, Shinogu is indirectly responsible for his own misery and the drama that will later face his family.

As he grows, Shinogu's feelings for Hatsumi continue to develop as well. It is when he is in middle school that he realizes he is actually in love with Hatsumi (Ref: Vol. 9, Ch. 41, Pg. 05) and knows he can do nothing about it:

Shinogu: ...My love had changed into something...I had to keep a secret.
Shinogu: Since I couldn't tell her I loved her, I decided I'd look after her forever. Forever and ever...

When he graduates from high school, it is with high grades and the express desire to study medicine and become a doctor. However, as he communicates to his counselor, he realizes how much that kind of education would cost and how much it would hurt his family in the long run. He decides to make a sacrifice, and instead attends a local university to study law.

This brings us to the start of the manga. Shinogu, at the beginning, is attending his classes while still living at home, holding down three part-time jobs and saving up to move out on his own and repay his parents for all they've done. His feelings for Hatsumi are just as strong as they were, but he successfully suppresses them and is the ideal brother to both her, his youngest sister, Narita Akane and his younger brother, Narita Hikaru.

With the publication of Hot Gimmick S, more information will be added to this section, as it reveals more details about his birth and childhood prior to being adopted by the Narita's. Look forward to it!
